It is not as easy as it used to be for the average motorist to detect issues with their vehicle. However there are still a few areas where you will be able to pick up on problems early on - like the exhaust!
At A&D Autos we specialise in MOT testing, servicing and repairs for cars and vans in Bognor Regis, West Sussex. We have over 30 years of experience in the motor trade, so we know a lot about exhausts.
What Is That Sound?
Whether you are conscious of it or not you know how your car is supposed to sound. If you start hearing unfamiliar noises or a change in the usual sound, there may be a problem :
Your exhaust will include a silencer that muffles the sound it makes, so you will be aware if it suddenly seems louder.
If there is a regular rattling sound it could indicate that the catalytic converter, which helps control noxious emissions, may need replacing.
If the vehicle is chugging, perhaps there is a blockage.
The exhaust system is mounted and held by support brackets and clamps. If you hear a metallic rattling sound perhaps one of these has come loose.
An exhaust is also designed to keep gases away from the cabin, therefore, if you hear a hissing or find you are getting headaches while driving, there may be a leak coming from the exhaust manifold.
Take A Look
A visual inspection could tell you if there is trouble brewing. If you notice the exhaust is moving when the engine is running, it could be an early sign of a loose exhaust as mentioned above.
Rust - A little surface corrosion is to be expected, but if you notice a lot of rust it could be an early sign of bigger problems to come. Keep an eye open for any cracks or holes, particularly near joins or weld-points. If the mountings are very rusty the exhaust could suddenly fall off.
Do You Keep Track Of Fuel Consumption?
If you are filling up more often than usual, but you are not driving differently or carrying any heavy loads, it could mean the exhaust is leaking. A leak would force the engine to work harder and therefore burn more fuel.
