MOT tests can be daunting, especially if you’re a young driver and you’ve never taken your car for a MOT before… Here are our answers to some frequently asked MOT questions to help you out.
What is a MOT?
M.O.T stands for Ministry of transport. The MOT test is designed to ensure vehicles over 3 years old are properly maintained and comply with both environmental and safety related legal requirements.
When should I have my MOT done?
You do not need a MOT if your car is under 3 years old (lucky you!). If your car is over 3 years you’ll need your car MOT’d once a year. This doesn’t have to be on the exact date, as you can get your MOT up to a month (minus one day) before it runs out to keep the same renewal date (i.e. If your car is due for a MOT on the 19th November the earliest you can MOT your vehicle to keep the renewal date is the 20th October).
Will I receive a MOT reminder?
Unfortunately, there are no MOT reminders from the governing body. However, if you’ve had your vehicle MOT’d by us before we’ll give you a call to remind you when it’s due.
How long does a MOT test take?
An MOT takes 45 minutes to 1 hour, although bear in mind any repairs needed may take extra time. You’re more than welcome to stay, observe your vehicle, or use our free wi-fi for the duration of the MOT.
What do I need to bring to a MOT?
If your vehicle is having its first MOT, or your vehicle has had a change of registration you’ll need a V5C vehicle registration certificate (log book). If not you’ll just need your vehicle…
How much does a MOT cost?
Our MOT tests are £29 for class 4 vehicles, and £40 for class 7. Make sure you take into account any repairs which may be needed, as we’ll try to get most things sorted on the day. You’ll be informed of any additional charges upfront, so there won’t be any nasty surprises when it’s time to pay.
How do I make sure my vehicle passes its MOT?
There is no guarantee that your vehicle will pass its MOT, but regular servicing and maintenance will go a long way. Many common MOT failures can be prevented by simple checks of lights, tyre condition and pressure, mirrors, windscreen wipers and washers.
